Fathi Ghaben (1947–2024) was born in the village of Hirbiya in the Gaza Strip. He was a self-taught artist and educator renowned for his paintings commemorating Palestinian culture and resistance. He was also known to paint with his fingers rather than with a brush.
Ghaben was the first artist to use the Palestinian flag in his paintings. In 1984, he was arrested by Israeli occupation forces, fined, and sentenced to six months in prison. Israeli officials at this time confiscated seven of his paintings: Copies of his works had been printed as posters and widely distributed throughout Gaza and the West Bank, and occupying forces viewed these as propaganda that might incite demonstrations.
Fathi Ghaben passed away on the 25th of February 2024 after occupation forces denied him travel for medical treatment.
