ABED ABDI

Born in Haifa in 1942, Abed Abdi is a visual artist and art educator who has been consistently promoting Arab culture for over 60 years. Beyond his extensive work in diverse media, Abdi’s iconography marks a long contribution to the Palestinian struggle and the voicing of Palestinian identity, history, and suffering as a central theme of his creative work.

Abdi is most notably known for his illustrations and wood engraving prints and for monumental works in public spaces to commemorate Palestinian modern history that is still standing in Palestinian towns and villages, such as the Land Day monument in Sakhneen.

Abdi participated in many exhibitions locally and internationally. He was the recipient of the Young Artist’s Award at the Berlin International Youth Festival in 1971, and received the Herman Struck Best Artist of the Year Prize twice, in 1973 and in 1999. Abed Abdi is the founder of Arabelle – Visual Arts Workshop in Haifa, and co-founder of IBDAA – Association for Arts Development in Arab Society. He lives and works in Haifa.
