Bashar Khalaf is a Palestinian artist born in Ramallah in 1991, where he resides. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Al-Quds University in 2013 and his MA degree in Contemporary Visual Arts from Dar Al-Kalima University in Bethlehem in 2025.
He held his first solo exhibition, Shadow of the Shadow, at Gallery One in Ramallah in 2016, and his second solo exhibition, In Search for a Portrait, was held at Zawyeh Gallery in Ramallah in 2019.
His work has been featured in group exhibitions in several galleries, cultural centres, and institutions both locally and internationally. In 2026, his work was exhibited at the A. M. Qattan Foundation in Ramallah. He has also received several awards, including the Young Artist of the Year Award (YAYA) of the A. M. Qattan Foundation in 2014. He also received the Ismail Shammout Award of Dar Al-Kalima University in 2016, and the Palestinian Ministry of Culture granted him the State Order of Honour for a Young Artist in 2018.
Through his series of artistic projects, Khalaf explores several issues and concepts, drawing heavily on his ongoing quest to discover his own identity and its intersections with the collective Palestinian experience. His life experiences serve as a record of contemporary artistic production, grounded in a philosophy that generates critical and reflective questions about the transformations of Palestinian society, its land, and its spaces under the settler-colonial project and various forms of dominant power structures. From this perspective, his research and artistic production delve into issues such as the transformations of the concept of symbolism after the Oslo Accords, the repercussions of the neoliberal project on the public sphere in Palestine, the reproduction of meaning in the archives of presence and absence, counter-memory as a liberation tool seeing into the future, and the transformations of modern Palestinian cities and spaces and their relationship to the meanings of liberation and freedom.
